Recommendations for books on drawing the human anatomy? Can you recommend books / other resources for drawing the human anatomy? I'm not really able to go out and take life, if a book or something would be very useful. I would like to focus on improving my art, this summer.
The top of my list would be a book by Andrew Loomis, but more particularly "Figure Drawing For What It's Worth". All his books are exhausted, but you can find them on ebay if you look long enough. It will be interesting to the money you spend.
Then, any and all books by Burne Hogarth anatomy are also very good, I think they are still in print.
Bridgeman classic drawing books of anatomy should still be in print from Dover. It is recommended (and inexpensive) but I'll be honest and say they never did much for me (other generations of artists throughout the year would be different if) ...
Be aware that there are thousands of really bad set design on the market without any substance. There are very few good figure drawing, period. If you can, look at the book before buying it.
One last thought, I used to do sketches quickly from old movies on TV when I was a kid. I sketch in pencil and ink wash with a brush. This does wonders for catching porportion, gesture, and clothing very quickly after some time and welcomes you in the fight against the form to make drawings more involved later. Do not throw as many sketches on scrap paper that you can stand and you'll be amazed when you get in a short time. With DVDs, you can you can freeze sharp images, so you can take longer with your drawings that I could (in antiquity).
Good luck!
UPDATE: I took a look on eBay and there are currently a couple of "Figure Drawing for what her" Worth a cost of 9.99 and no offers. There are also "drawing heads and hands" with any offer another great book of Loomis. Do not be a fraid to get beat a (cheap) or later editions (also cheap, but with edited portions). Those who are in good condition to go waaaay too much money.
I also see the "heads of design" booklet is back in print. This is a book very badly done, be sure to avoid it. It is like a coloring book with some of his oversized drawings and almost none of his instructions. It is part of the series Walter Foster. They just caught a couple of pictures and called it a book Andrew Loomis, with a title very similar to a real book Andrew Loomis.
My favorite is the Anatomicae Cyclopedia, you can find it here
