Freeware Notepad Replacement

I am looking for a replacement of Notepad that has an automatic backup function, font color and font, spell checker, list sorting function. The main thing I seek is an automatic backup feature that can be set to record without my rescue each time. I'm tired of losing my job when my freezes, crashes or reboots itself. Freeware is preferred.

I am 99% TextPad has auto-save and all those other functions. It is not free, but the free trial period (with full functionality) is unlimited, so ... You can use it free for as long as you want.
