How does one become a history teacher in secondary schools? My friend would like to become a high school teacher of history, but we are unclear about the requirements in this regard. Can someone tell me, dumbed-down, everyday language, what to do to become a schoolteacher? For example, what degrees he should get (one in education or history?), Etc.
Thank you in advance for responding!
He must check with the school district where he wants to learn about the requirements they seek. In general, it should major in history, minor in education and training courses, it should be able to obtain certification by the state college he attends. However, after he earns his bachelor's degree and began teaching, the State Department of Education will give him between 3 and 5 years to complete mastery that should be in a story or education (in his case, probably secondary education.)
Contact your local school district administration, who have claims and demands to open (and non-open) positions, as it can vary from state to state.
In Florida, for example, the requirement, if I remember, was 4 (four) years of study (whatever your age), and your teaching certificate from Florida.
ps he has a better chance of getting a job in focusing / looking for a secondary position that the majority of prospective teachers seeking positions at the elementary level. I speak as a 10 cons 1.
Level of education depend on the state you live in. Some states allow a major in education, but others have not, especially at secondary level. He will need a bachelor's degree in history from a four-year college, then he will need to take education courses and training students to graduate. This usually takes another year.
Go online to your states dept. education and you can know what is needed. A simpler method would be to contact a college or university near you and ask. In addition, if there is a career counselor at your school is their job to have this kind of info. Good luck!
To become a high school teacher of history, at least, you'll need a bachelor's degree in education with a major or minor in history or social sciences. Some states require all teachers to receive master. Check with the Ministry of Education in your state for requirements in your area.
