Ice Breakers For Teachers

Posted on April 17, 2010.
Ice Breakers For TeachersJunior high teachers, what kinds of activities / icebreakers do you do during the first week of school?

I am a first-grade teacher and I was wondering what kind of things you do in your classes to junior high during the first week of school. It is supposed to be in the 90s for most of the week next week (without A / C in the class), which is not ideal conditions for learning ... if this kind of thing you suggest?

Having worked with children in college (not in class, but in a more environmental outdoor education where schools come to us for their travel class), I made many of these activities with this group age. Here's an example:

1) Name of the game and train "name"
Accessories needed: a few balls or cushions
The children stand in a circle. The idea is very simple, call the name of a classmate and throw the ball to them. Once that person receives the ball, then they should throw it to someone else who has not yet had. This continues until the ball returns to the host, which is usually the teacher. For the second round, have circulated in the same order, but make them a little faster. Once they begin to make the hang of it, put sticks in them and tell them that the green ball (or color) must go back. Continue to add similar changes as a ball goes in the opposite order, or just throw another ball at least they expect to be the end it's essentially really confusing.

The train is another name (get to know each other) activity. The children stand in a circle. A person is selected for "start" the process. They mount to any person in the circle and say: "Johnny's" (replace Johnny with the name of the child) and end with "It's Johnny, Johnny's, Johnny's, Johnny , Johnny!). So now, the train "back when Johnny takes someone now. Say it takes Ann. Everyone in the line, one at a time to say "Ann is" until it reaches the end and then everyone says "It's Ann is Ann, is Ann, Ann, Ann. You continue this until everyone is in the train "

"People Bingo" (all my groups LOVED it!)
Accessories needed: pre-made bingo cards rights, pens or pencils for each student

Preparation: Make a 5x5 grid on a piece of paper so it looks like a bingo card standard. Let each block large enough that you can write (or type if you prefer to do on the computer) in it. In each block, you want to put something a student can be made or a characteristic that suits them. Try not to make it too easy to throw a few obscure. You must complete at least 24 of the 25 seats in place (you can post a free center)
Suggestions:
Eggplant Parmesan-Aime
favorite cereal is Captain Crunch
Was not he born to (whatever the state you live in)
A-one older sister
Has one brother-in college
-Can recite the alphabet backwards without stopping
Throw-in that which only the teacher can answer is always a good idea ... I used to use "was born before 1990" but you can use others such as "have a driver's license" or "the right to vote at the next election" or whatever. Sometimes children do not catch on right away that the teacher is in the game too.

To make this activity is very simple. The children each have a card and a pen (CIL), and must find someone to sign their sheet. When they have a line of 5, they shout BINGO. You must establish the following rules before you begin:
1-Each person can sign your card twice (three times I would, but only nine children have sometimes engaged and I'm assuming you have more class than that).
2-The same person can sign your card twice. He must have someone else sign your card between the two.
