Parent-Teacher Conferences and Homework: Let's Talk! One year I taught third year, a parent conference came his son red, sweaty and barely able to stammer a hello. I offered him some water and hoped it did not have a heart attack! She finally relaxed and confided that she had been worried all afternoon in the parent-teacher conference. The idea of having to meet and talk to the teacher-any teacher-practically gave this woman a panic attack!
This parental concern may have been worse than most, but most of us would probably agree that the parent-teachers are not our favorite way to spend an hour. I'm not saying that every parent should rearrange their schedule and love sitting in tiny chairs, but lecturer parent can be a positive experience. They provide the opportunity to:
- Turn in the paperwork and the forms and permission slips that you intended to meet since the first day of school
- Make sure that the teacher has updated personal information such as your new address or cell phone number
- To remind or inform the teacher about your child's allergies or special needs
- Whether your child is settled in and seems happy in his new class
- Put your hands on this newsletter!
Homework
One of the best things absolutely teacher conferences parent is that you can discuss homework! A conference is your second chance to ask all your homework questions and get answers by the teacher (your first opportunity was in Back to School Night). Please print this list of homework questions for Teachers . Take with you, ask questions and write down what the teacher says! You can view it later.
It is also an excellent opportunity to share your own homework philosophy with your child's teacher. No, you will not discuss religion or politics! I refer to your feelings and theories about homework: how much homework you feel comfortable "making" your child every night, whether or not you allow your child to do homework on weekends, vacations and holidays, etc. A lot of this information will probably occur to you when you ask questions on homework for the teacher-please share it! The teachers appreciate it, you'll feel better, and your child will benefit from your honest and open.
Now, en route to the conference and no anxiety attacks!
